Fish Curry - Kottayam Style

Well adopting this recipe from my mother-in-law, she used to cook non - veg dishes in a classy way. Once when I was on to her place she made this fish curry for dinner. It was fantastic. She kept over the leftovers and we took it the next day and it was just wow!!!! Although I have tried other fish curries this one turned out to be my favorite. Since then whenever I made fish curry, the first option would be Amma's fish curry- the way I call it... Now to recipe...

Give it a try! & do let me know your experience...

Ingredients

Fish- any fleshy fish 1/2 kg
Oil - 4 tbsp
Mustard seeds/ kaduku- 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds/ Uluva- 1 tsp
Shallots/ Kochulli - 15 nos sliced
Kudampuli- 1 big piece soaked in 1/2 cup water
Green Chilly- 1
Ginger- a small piece chopped
Garlic- 5 nos chopped
Red Chilly Powder- 2 tbsp
Turmeric Powder- 1 tsp
Pepper Powder- 1 tbsp
Fenugreek Powder/ Uluva podi- 1 1/2 tsp
Water 1-2 cups
Salt- as per taste

Be ready with all your ingredients.. Here we begin.......

1. Heat oil in an earthen kadai. Add mustard and fenugreek seeds and allow it to sizzle.

2.Add in shallots, ginger, garlic and turmeric powder and saute well.

3. Add in green chilly.

4. Add chilli powder and pepper powder. Allow the spice powders to mix up.Saute for 2-3 minutes.

5. Now add tamarind pulp and add 1 1/2 cups of water. Add salt and bring to boil.
6.Once it started boiling add in fish pieces. Mix well and cover and cook for 10 minutes.

7. Add fenugreek powder and mix slowly.. (If you want the curry to be more water consistent, add water at this point, before adding fenugreek powder and bring to boil)

8.Switch off the flame and add 3 tbsp of oil on to of fish curry and cover it  and let it rest for 1-2 hours for flavours to  enter in the curry..

9. Serve

Notes

1. The curry has to be cooked in a medium flame.. However when spice powders are added put it in a low flame.

2. After adding fish pieces ,once it is cooked mix gently..

3. You can use kadai for preparing this. However curry fish made in an earthern pot has a different taste and flavour. The curry tastes best when served next day..

4. Regarding oil, any refined oil can be used for making this. However I suggest coconut oil.. It tastes heaven...
